Tatsuo Miyajima: Talking Art

Saturday 24 April 2010, 14.00–15.30

Since 1987, Tatsuo Miyajima has been using small LED counters that display flashing numbers, arranging them in grids or around sculptural forms. His installations invite viewers to reflect on the passing of time in both personal and more abstract terms, while alluding to structures as small as a single cell and as large as a planetary system.
Tatsuo Miyajima is in conversation with art historian Marcus Verhagen.

Additional reading for Week 10, Monday April 20th

Dear all,

hope you had a good Easter break - and managed to get some work done too.

Please have a look at Mark Hansen's 2002 paper here for this coming Monday, a very useful link for our discussion on digital media and embodiment.

See you Monday,

Digital Economy Bill - or how to kill digital creativity?

Following agreement by both Houses on the text of the Bill it received Royal Assent on 8 April. The Bill is now an Act of Parliament (law).

The Bill implements aspects of Government policy on digital media set out in the ‘Digital Britain’ White Paper published in June 2009.

Key areas

* requires Ofcom to report on communications infrastructure and media content
* imposes obligations on internet service providers to reduce online copyright infringement
* allows the Secretary of State to intervene in internet domain name registration
* requires Channel Four to provide public service content on a range of media
* provides more flexibility over the licensing of Channel 3 and Channel 5 services
* modifies the licensing regime to facilitate switchover to digital radio
* allows variation of the public service provision in Channel 3 and 5 licences
* provides Ofcom with additional powers in relation to electromagnetic spectrum access
* extends the range of video games that are subject to age-related classification
* includes non-print formats in the public lending right payment scheme

Proposed journals for your research

When you write academic essays you are expected to consult primary sources, such as books and journal articles, to support the points you are making. Academic essays require research, not only to learn more about what you’re studying and writing about, but also to provide evidence that reinforces your arguments.

The following list was created by Lynn Clark, Assistant Research Professor in Communication at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her criterion for ranking the journals can be found at her website: http://ucsu.colorado.edu/~clarkl/gradstudents.htm#journals

Communication Journals:

1. Communication Research
2. Public Culture
3. Journal of Communication
4. Communication Theory
5. Journal of Broadcast and Electronic Media
6. Media, Culture, and Society
7. Critical Studies in Media Communication
8. Journalism and Mass Communication
9. Communication Monographs
10. European Journal of Communication
11. Cultural Studies
12. Media Studies Journal
13. Javnost - The Public
14. Journal of Communication Inquiry

Sociology journals that publish media studies

1. Symbolic Interaction
2. Contemporary Sociology
3. Sociology of Religion
4. Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion
5. Review of Religious Research
6. Youth & Society
7. Journal of Contemporary Ethnography

Promising new journals/too new to rank:

New Media & Society
Popular Communication
Cultural Studies - Critical Methodologies
Journal of Media and Religion
Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies

Other journals of interest:

Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies
Emergences: Journal for the Study of Media and Composite Cultures

Hope this helps your research over Easter.

Have a good break!

next Tuesday - important please reply asap

Hi all,

regarding our conversation about whether to go ahead with the net art lecture or have essay tutorials before easter break instead: how many of you would like to see me for a tutorial (i.e. have already thought about which question you want to address and want to discuss it?)

Can people send me an email or reply here on the blog about whether they want a tutorial and if the numbers are sufficient we'll go ahead with that. We can always do the net art lecture after easter. I think it may be useful so that you can have a clearer idea/direction and work on it during Easter, but it's up to you.

Please let me know about this by Sunday, at the latest .

re the grey album

I don't think the link that I posted via the Grey album image came up ok the other day. SO here it is again, the story as I know it:
THE GREY ALBUM LEGAL BATTLE SUMMARIZED

DJ Danger Mouse remixed the vocals from Jay-Z's The Black Album and the Beatles' White Album and called his creation The Grey Album. He sent about 3,000 promo copies out, and was soon served with a cease-and-desist notice from EMI, who owns the rights to the White Album master. Danger Mouse complied with EMI's order, butStay Free! (sponsors of the Illegal Art Exhibit) and other fans and activists continued distributing the record over the Internet. EMI sent legal threats to many of us as well but later backed down. Next, SONY/ATV -- who owns the rights to the Beatles' compositions -- stepped in and sent our internet service provider a DMCA takedown notice (3/1/2004). We secured legal representation from the EFF, moved our website to the Online Policy Group (a free-speech ISP), and responded to Sony with this letter. Fortunately, Sony also dropped the case and The Grey Album remains safely online.

The Re-used Sample.

Each Dj has one percussive sample (ie: snare, kick etc..) and they build a tune out of their samples. This is a group called 'Ned Hoddings' consisting of Dj Toadstyle, Dj Excess, Dj Ricci Rucker and Dj Mike Boogie. This track is played live in a very famous L.A club the knitting factory.

The Grey Album (conspiracy)

there is a lot on controversy regarding this album and Jay Z in general. Anyone that has an interest in conspiracy and occult history will probably know quite alot about it.

Here is one conspiracy that can definitely be proved. Its to do with playing one of the interludes backwards from the grey album. My friend Alex insisted that i present this to you all.

Alot of this may see a little far fetched but when you see how much symbolism and ancient symbols are used in our every day lives it quite insane. This next little exert is taken from a guy called john todd who came out of the woodwork in the 70's ans started talking about freemasonry, witchcraft and the music industry.

I sampled what he said for a mixtape (on logic) i did with my mate as i have always thought a lot of pop artists these days would need to have sold their soul to satan to get where they are. But that's another story.

from now on i will keep this kinda stuff to my own blog

[Sound Vs Visuals] Autechre - Gantz Graf

Autechre have been at the high end of distorted electronica since the early 90's. They are pioneers in their genre of IDM (intelligent dance music.) Their music will not be to everyones taste, but this video is a very good example of the correlation between sound and video.

London Festival of Architecture 2010 19 June - 4 July 2010

Not quite what we do but very exciting nevertheless!

The Architecture Foundation is proud to deliver The London Festival of Architecture 2010 in partnership with RIBA London and New London Architecture. The Festival, running from 19 June to 4 July, will be a city-wide celebration of architecture in the capital. As London gears up for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games we look at ways that planners, architects, clients and local communities play their part in the development of 'The Welcoming City'.

LFA2010 will have three weekends over which visitors will be encouraged to explore three key areas of London namely, the Nash Ramblas, Bankside Urban Forest and High Street 2012.

The Architecture Foundation is pleased to be curating the Bankside Urban Forest and High Street 2012 hubs in 2010. They will also be responsible for delivering the International Architecture Showcase in collaboration with the British Council and the International Architecture Student Festival in collaboration with London Metropolitan University.

555 KUBIK "How it would be, if a house was dreaming"

Another interesting digital instalation I found recently on Vimeo.
The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture - the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle. The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers "Galerie der Gegenwart". Resultant permeabilty of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves - describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

Scanned Articles Guidance

Please find attached - links to scanned article files for the readings for your units.
These should be placed only on pages of your website for that particular module.

The CLA licence we are allowed to scan under has some conditions -

Please direct only those students who are on a particular module to that module's readings.
Other students should not be reading/printing articles for modules they are not taking.

Students should be advised to print only 1 copy of an article - they should not email these articles on to other students or save them

Please do not link to these articles from other sites or download and keep copies of these files yourself - the files should only be stored on the library’s server

Articles are valid for the dates as follows - 30/09/2010.
We will contact you shortly before these dates expire: if these modules are running again and still require the same articles then we can renew for next year. If not then we will remove the files from our server and the links will become dead

Please ask students to take notice of the copyright notes on front page of each article

Some articles are from books owned by your library and not by ours - please do not remove these from your library collection as we will no longer be able to display scanned extracts from a book if the university does not own a copy. If we are audited by the Copyright Licensing Agency then we may need to show them the original copies of books to demonstrate ownership.

A short reminder from the Decode: Digital Design Sensations Exhibition showcasing the latest developments in digital and interactive design, from small, screen-based, graphics to large-scale interactive installations. The exhibition includes works by established international artists and designers such as Daniel Brown, Golan Levin, Daniel Rozin, Troika and Karsten Schmidt.

The exhibition explores three themes: Code presents pieces that use computer code to create new works and looks at how code can be programmed to create constantly fluid and ever-changing works. Interactivity looks at works that are directly influenced by the viewer. Visitors will be invited to interact with and contribute to the development of the exhibits. Network focuses on works that comment on and utilise the digital traces left behind by everyday communications and looks at how advanced technologies and the internet have enabled new types of social interaction and mediums of self-expression.

Welcome and unit guide week 4 corrections

Hello all,

This is a space for our thoughts, ideas and, crucially, organisation and communication for the critical code unit, so please use it as much as you can.
For example, you can blog things of interest to the rest of us, such as artists, websites, events, conferences and so on.

For now, please find here the corrected reading for week 4 (the week after our V&A outing):

I will bring you photocopies of this at the V&A.
